Singled Out
Single Professionals Speak On Work/Family Initiatives

Does your company’s work/family initiative honor the needs of single employees? In a powerful article by Carol Kleiman, noted columnist for the Chicago Tribune, titled “Familiy-Friendly Benefits Snub Singles,” the writer points out that many single people feel left out of company-sponsored family-friendly programs and feel put upon by colleagues with families. They seem to always be asked to work holidays or overtime and when they occasionally ask to take unscheduled time off, permission is often denied. According to Thomas Coleman, an attorney and executive director of the American Association for Single People (www.singlesrights.com), some 40 percent of the workforce is unmarried and 60 percent of the workforce doesn’t have a child under the age of 18 in the household. Some answers Kleiman suggests may include more open communication, asking employees to be honest about what their individual needs and desires are, and cafeteria-based benefits plans.
